Apple and LG partner to develop smart home locks and thermostats

Apple and LG are reportedly collaborating on a new lineup of smart home hardware, including security locks and thermostats, designed to integrate with an upcoming Apple hub.

Apple is working with LG to launch a suite of smart home devices, according to reports from Bloomberg cited by TechCrunch and The Verge. The new lineup is expected to include a smart lock, a thermostat, a video doorbell, and indoor and outdoor security cameras. TechCrunch noted that the devices will reportedly carry LG branding despite being co-developed by both companies.

The Japan Times reported that this arrangement allows Apple to expand its ecosystem without the full cost and complexity of manufacturing the accessories itself. The Verge described the partnership as a "second-party" development arrangement. One specific feature mentioned by Bloomberg is a deadbolt lock equipped with ultra-wideband technology, which could allow doors to unlock automatically as a user approaches.

The hardware is designed to pair with a rumored smart home hub that features a six-inch square display for wall mounting or countertop use. TechCrunch reported that this hub is expected to launch on October 13, and the LG devices may be announced next week as well. The Verge added that several of the new products will support the Matter and Thread smart home protocols as part of a reboot for Apple's HomeKit platform.

The move is seen as a competitive step against Amazon's smart home products, such as the Ring security camera line. In addition to the security hardware, The Verge noted that Apple may also reveal an upgraded Apple TV and a new HomePod mini during an event later this month.
