Thomas Markle Sr., father of Meghan Markle, was arrested by federal agents in Florida and charged with possession of child sexual abuse material.

Federal agents arrested 82-year-old Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of the Duchess of Sussex, in Florida on Friday following a federal investigation into child sexual abuse material.

The FBI arrested Markle outside Tampa in Lakewood, Florida, according to reports from CBS News and Deutsche Welle. Federal prosecutors stated that the 82-year-old is charged with one count of possession of child pornography. FBI Director Kash Patel said agents moved quickly to identify and locate explicit material, alleging that Markle targeted innocent children through his actions.

The investigation involved federal agents searching two storage units in the Los Angeles area. Deutsche Welle reported that authorities seized approximately 78 items, including film negatives, slides, and books. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli alleged that the material included photographs depicting Markle himself with prepubescent girls. If convicted, Markle faces a maximum federal prison sentence of 20 years.

The arrest follows claims made by Markle’s son, Thomas Markle Jr., who reportedly told authorities he discovered illicit material at his father's home in the Philippines. According to Deutsche Welle, the FBI had previously indicated it would assist Philippine authorities with the case. While NBC News reached out to Markle’s defense attorney, they did not receive an immediate response.

The Duchess of Sussex has been estranged from her father for several years. CBS News reported that she recently called the allegations against him "sickening," while Deutsche Welle noted she said she was "deeply distressed" by the reports. Fox News added that an expert suggested Buckingham Palace was "blindsided" by the allegations as the family faces new turmoil.
